KLIA Airport Hotel vs City Hotel: Which Should You Book?

There is a clean rule for this and almost nobody states it, because it depends on a train timetable rather than on how nice the hotels are.

The short version

  • Flight departs before roughly 7am? Stay at the airport. There is no train early enough.
  • Land after about midnight and too tired to move? Stay at the airport for one night, then go in.
  • Anything else? Stay in the city. It is cheaper, more interesting, and the transfer is 28 minutes.
  • A long layover is a separate question with a separate answer, and it usually is not a hotel.

At a glance

Your situation Book Why
Departure before about 7am Airport No train before roughly 5.05am
Arrival after midnight, onward flight next morning Airport Last train from KL Sentral is 1am
Tight self transfer, especially across terminals Airport T1 and T2 are not connected airside
Departure from about 9am onwards City 28 minute transfer, trains every 20 minutes
Any leisure stay of two nights or more City Nothing to walk to at the airport
Layover under about six hours Neither Stay airside, use a lounge or rest area

The timetable is the whole decision

KLIA Ekspres runs non stop between KL Sentral and the airport. It takes 28 minutes to Terminal 1 and about 33 minutes to Terminal 2, and it goes every 20 minutes for most of the day.

Now the part that decides things. As of August 2026 the first train out of the airport is around 5.05am, and the last train from KL Sentral leaves at 1am. Between those two times there is no train in either direction.

So work backwards from your flight. Most airlines want you at the counter two to three hours before an international departure. For a 7am flight that means arriving by 4am or 5am, and there is simply no train that early. Your options become a Grab across an empty motorway in the small hours, a pre booked car at a premium, or sleeping at the airport in the first place.

That is the rule. It is not about whether airport hotels are pleasant. It is about whether the railway is running when you need it.

What the transfer actually costs

A standard adult single on KLIA Ekspres is RM55, a return is RM100, and there is around 10% off buying through the operator app or website, as of August 2026.

Two people returning is therefore roughly RM200 on the express train alone. Hold that figure, because the usual case for an airport hotel is that it saves a transfer, and the usual case against is that city rooms are cheaper. Priced properly, the gap narrows more than people expect.

The slower KLIA Transit on the same line costs less and stops on the way, which suits you if you are near an intermediate station. Our guide to getting from KLIA into the city compares every option.

The terminal trap

KLIA has two terminals and they are not connected airside. Moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 means clearing immigration and taking the shuttle train, which takes about three minutes but sits behind a border crossing.

The consequence for this decision is that an airport hotel is only convenient for your terminal. A room that is a five minute walk from T1 is a passport check and a train ride from T2, which is where most low cost carriers operate. Check which terminal your flight uses before you book anything on the basis of proximity, and read our comparison of the two terminals if you are unsure.

It also means a self transfer between two separate tickets is a real undertaking rather than a stroll, and that is worth building time around.

What you give up by staying at the airport

Be clear eyed about this. KLIA sits well south of the city in Sepang, surrounded by plantation and motorway. There is no neighbourhood, no evening, and nothing to walk to. You are buying proximity to a departure gate and nothing else.

Rooms there also are not the bargain people assume. Airport hotels price for captive demand, so an equivalent room in the city is frequently cheaper, and in the city it comes with somewhere to eat that is not a food court.

If your trip is three nights, spending one of them at the airport costs you a third of your time in KL for the sake of a 28 minute train ride. That is rarely a good trade, and it is the mistake this page mostly exists to prevent.

When the airport genuinely is right

Early departures. Anything leaving before roughly 7am, for the timetable reason above. This is the main case and it is not marginal.

Very late arrivals with onward travel. Landing at 1am with a domestic connection at 8am is a night at the airport, not a round trip into town.

Travelling with small children or a lot of luggage on an awkward schedule, where the transfer is the thing that will break everyone.

A tight self transfer between separate tickets, particularly across terminals, where the buffer matters more than the room.

Our roundup of where to stay in Kuala Lumpur covers the city side of the choice by area.

The rate you are quoted is not the rate you pay

Tourism tax of RM10 per room per night applies to foreign passport holders only, charged per room rather than per person. Add 8% service tax and, at most properties, a 10% service charge. This applies at the airport and in the city alike, so it does not change the comparison, but it does change your budget.

Booking either side of the decision

If the timetable has decided this for you, these are the two searches. Airport rooms in Sepang go early on nights when several long haul departures cluster, so book that one sooner than feels necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay at KLIA the night before an early flight?

If your flight leaves before roughly 7am, yes. The first KLIA Ekspres from the airport is around 5.05am and the last from KL Sentral is 1am, so for a very early departure there is no train and you would be relying on a Grab in the middle of the night. For later flights, stay in the city.

How long does it take to get from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur?

28 minutes on KLIA Ekspres from Terminal 1 to KL Sentral, about 33 from Terminal 2. Trains run roughly every 20 minutes. A single is RM55 as of August 2026.

Are KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 connected?

Not airside. Moving between them means clearing immigration and taking a shuttle train, so an airport hotel that is convenient for one terminal is not convenient for the other. Check your terminal before booking on proximity.
