Here’s the thing a lot of visitors miss: you don’t have to pay to go up the Petronas Towers to enjoy them. The base of the towers is one of the best free things to do in Kuala Lumpur, with a nightly musical fountain show, a lovely green park with the best free view of the towers, and a huge mall to shop, eat and escape the heat. You can happily spend a whole evening here without spending much at all.

The Lake Symphony fountain show (free)
This is the star of the show, and it costs nothing. On a man-made lake in front of Suria KLCC, two musical fountains put on a display of water, coloured lights and music, dancing in front of the illuminated Petronas Towers. It’s genuinely lovely, family-friendly, and one of the best free experiences in the city.
Show times
The musical light-and-sound shows run in the evening, roughly every 30 minutes from about 8pm until 10pm, with each show lasting around 10 minutes. There are usually earlier light-only fountain displays around 7:30pm too. Exact times shift, so treat these as a guide and check the current schedule if timing is tight. The key point: come after dark, when the towers are lit, for the full effect.
Where to watch, and getting a good spot
- The esplanade in front of Suria KLCC is the main viewing area, right where the mall meets the park. You’ll see the fountains the moment you step out of the mall’s ground-floor park exit.
- Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early for a popular evening show, especially at weekends, to get a spot along the railing rather than peering over shoulders.
- For the best photo, position yourself so the fountains are in the foreground and the lit towers rise behind them. It’s one of the most striking free shots in KL.
KLCC Park: the best free view of the towers
The 50-acre KLCC Park wraps around the back of the towers, and it’s free and open all day. Designed by the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, it’s a genuinely pleasant green space in the middle of the city, and crucially, it’s the best place to photograph the Petronas Towers for free. From the park lawns and the lakeside you get the full height of both towers, especially good at dusk and after dark.

Suria KLCC: the mall at the base
Suria KLCC sits directly beneath the towers and is open daily from 10am to 10pm. It’s an upmarket mall with over 300 shops, from luxury names to mid-range and local brands, but even if you’re not shopping it’s useful: it’s a cool, air-conditioned escape from the heat or rain, and a solid place to eat.
- Food: the Signatures food court on the lower level is a good, affordable spot for local and Asian dishes, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants across the mall.
- Kinokuniya, a large bookshop, and a cinema, if you want to escape a downpour.
- It connects directly to the KLCC LRT station and, by walkway, to the Convention Centre and the aquarium.
It’s the natural place to have dinner or a coffee before heading out to the park for the fountain show.

Aquaria KLCC
One of the largest aquariums in Southeast Asia, in the basement of the Convention Centre next to the park, a short covered walk from Suria KLCC. It has more than 5,000 creatures, a 90-metre walk-through underwater tunnel, a touch pool, and shark feeding sessions. Entry is around RM69 for an adult and RM59 for a child, indicative and worth checking, and it’s open daily, roughly 10am to 8pm. It’s a reliable family pick, especially on a rainy afternoon. Petrosains Discovery Centre
A large, hands-on science museum on level 4 of Suria KLCC, run by the national oil company, with interactive exhibits on science, energy and technology that kids love. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays outside school holidays), from mid-morning, with last admission in the late afternoon, so it’s a daytime activity. Great for families and a good rainy-day option.
Petronas Philharmonic Hall
Tucked into the base of the towers is the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, an elegant concert hall and home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. If you fancy a cultural evening, check the programme, book ahead, and note there’s a smart dress code. It’s a lovely, less obvious thing to do at KLCC.
A free (or nearly free) KLCC evening
Here’s how to put it together into a great low-cost evening, which is how I’d do it with visitors.
- Late afternoon: arrive as the heat eases and wander KLCC Park, grabbing your free photos of the towers from the lawns and lakeside.
- Early evening: head into Suria KLCC for dinner, from the affordable Signatures food court to a proper restaurant, and duck the afternoon rain if it comes.
- After dark: come out to the esplanade for the Lake Symphony fountain show, with the towers lit up behind. Catch one of the 8pm to 10pm shows.

Getting there and practical tips

- Bring a little cash for food stalls, though the mall takes cards.
- Use the mall as a rain shelter. If an afternoon storm hits, duck into Suria until it passes, then head out for the fountain show.
- It’s stroller and wheelchair friendly at ground level, unlike some KL attractions.
An honest note
This is a busy, popular, touristy spot, so don’t expect a quiet, hidden gem. The mall is upmarket and can be pricey, the fountain show draws crowds at the popular times, and the whole area hums with people, especially at weekends. But the two best things here, KLCC Park and the Lake Symphony fountain show, are completely free and genuinely worth your time, and that’s rare for a city-centre headline attraction. Go in the evening, keep your expectations realistic about the crowds, and it’s a lovely, low-cost few hours.
